This workshop is the 12th of a series of symposia/workshops that began in 1993 with the aim of bringing together researchers, developers, users, and practitioners carrying out research and development in novel systems based on geo-spatial data and knowledge, and fostering interdisciplinary discussions and research in all aspects of geographic information systems. The symposium will provide a forum for original research contributions and practical system design, implementation, and applications of GIS.

The purpose of this new workshop is to address a major and growing challenge for industry and government: efficient and effective access and processing of content contained in hardcopy documents. Some of the topics to be addressed, both by academics and industrial practitioners, include: IR in the image domain, innovative/robust OCR, classification of OCR documents, processing text in video, information visualization, processing faxed texts, form recognition from images and noisy text, duplicate detection.
